ANDY IRONS GOES WILD

May 2, 2009
A.I set to do damage

A.I set to do damage

The man that pulled the pin on the ’09 ASP, Andy Irons, will be entering the BILLABONG PRO TAHITI as a wild card. Seems getting to surf the worlds best left hand barrel, with only one other guy in the water was just too much to say NO to.

“Tahiti has always been a special place to me for both the waves and the people there,” Irons said. “I have already been there once this year so far, and am psyched to be heading back to spend some time catching up with all the boys. I’m hoping we finally get some solid swell for the whole event.”

Andy has taken a year off the ASP World Tour to recharge and will retake his spot on tour next year. In an interview with surfline late last year Andy discussed the reason for his move.

“Do any of you people ever think about how draining it is to travel all year long, going to the exact same places, when the waves seem to almost always be shitty, trying to keep a winning attitude? You don’t see anyone giving Bruce shit about going off tour or losing in France with a 2, but that’s ’cause he never acted like he cared. Figure that shit out… You are on tour to win, and anyone who is on tour that says they don’t want to win is just saying that to make themselves feel better about losing.”

As a wildcard Andy won’t only be taking on the heavy lefts at Chopes, there’s a good chance he’ll come up against Kelly Slater. Kelly has been plagued by wildcards this year, losing to two in as many events, so Chopes is shaping up to be a cracker! We’re gunning for an IRONS/SLATER showdown to give us a taste of the fiercest competiors going at each other once again.

Slater said: “I’m not happy to have such a slow start, but it’s good fuel for doing something if I can get motivated for it. It’s all how you view it. I don’t expect to have an easy heat at this event to start, more likely one of the hardest heats to with. If I can get past at least one wildcard this year, I might actually have a chance to get a result!”

The Billabong Pro is set to kick off around the 9th May with some solid swells expected. Get onto www.billabongpro.com to get amped for one of the best ASP events of the year.

DANE REYNOLDS – BRO

April 13, 2009
THE DARK SIDE OF DANE

THE DARK SIDE OF DANE

BLOG: http://www.dane-reynolds.com/

Dane Reynolds surfed uncompromisingly during his rookie year on the ASP World Tour, combining progressive aerials and massive tail out-turns in his performances, stunning onlookers and sending some of the most elite surfers on the ASP Top 45 packing their bags. The young natural-footer from Ventura, California donated especially memorable performances at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, the Quiksilver Pro France and the Boost Mobile Pro in 2008 and his equal 5th place finishes in those events combined with his laid back approach to competition has proven to be a dangerous combination which last left the remainder of the Top 45 fearing a draw against the innovative Californian.

With Reynolds putting several skeptics to rest regarding his competitive abilities in 2008, he will indeed be an even bigger threat to the ASP Top 45 in 2009 with a year of experince under his belt. Aside from his proven competitive skill, Reynolds jaw-dropping maneuvers have earned him the title of the world’s most progressive free-surfer by many, with his amazing surfing found in his first profile video, ‘Dane Reynolds: First Chapter’, as well as parts in Taylor Steele’s ‘Stranger than Fiction and Quiksilver’s ‘Young Guns’ videos.

2009 WCT – SUPER SEASON

March 2, 2009
BEDE THROWING BUCKETS

BEDE THROWING BUCKETS

I don’t know about you, but I have to say I am amped for this seasons CT. With all the pre-hype media: Slater going for 10, Fanning stronger than ever and wanting his second trophy, Taj firing up for his best show ever, Parko wanting a world championship and some of the hot young guys wanting to pounce at the opportunity with Irons out of the race. The PRO SHOW is looking f*cking serious! So with that in mind, here is a quick update.

Round 1 has been completed with the boys putting on an awesome show in not epic, but ok conditions. The comp has been on hold since, however round 2 is looking to flare up and we’re hoping will kick off early this week. (You can check out the event live by heading to www.quiksilverpro.com.au.) We strongly reccomend this, because as I said above, 2009 is shaping up to be a fierce year of competition and you don’t want to be the one that has to hear people describing the action and telling you that you missed some of the best surfing yet.

So before round 2 action begins this week, here are a few sweet shots from Simon Muirhead who has been up at the event shooting like a madman. Simon is a great all round photographer and has some amazing surf shots in his stable that you can view by heading to www.simonmuirhead.com.

SLATER IS GOING FOR 10!

February 19, 2009
SLATS MAKES IT OFFICIAL!

SLATS MAKES IT OFFICIAL!

Not that this needed confirmation, but it is always good to have things like this locked in, especially for those that will be competing with the 9 x world champ! The other 44 surfers will now have a big task on their hands to keep Kelly from 10! We hear Quiksilver have offered a cool $10mil packet if he makes it happen!

We think this could be a hot year of surfing, especially after the slightly disappointing 2008 season. Let’s hope the year kicks off strong and there is some hard core competition, after all surfing could do with a boost of publicity during these hard times!

Reigning and nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 37, will begin his campaign for an unprecedented 10th ASP World Title at the Quiksilver Pro presented by LG Mobile.

Event No. 1 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Quiksilver Pro will be held at the Gold Coast’s Snapper Rocks from February 28 through March 11, 2009. The Quiksilver Trials and Roxy Trials will take place on February 27, 2009.

Slater, who in past seasons has been reluctant to commit to a full year of competition, has announced his intentions for the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast and has acknowledged the allure of a possible 10th ASP World Title.

“I commit to where I am,” Slater said. “I’ll be on the Gold Coast for sure. I’m pretty excited about some new equipment and am ready to surf, I think. No. 10 is alluring and is there for the attempt, but I’ll let everyone else worry about the pressure of it as well as I can.”

Despite the Floridian’s dominance on last year’s ASP Dream Tour, Slater admits that the acquisition of ASP World Title No. 10 will be no easy feat, especially considering the hunger and talent of returning ASP Top 45 rippers.

“I’m not sure whether Dane (Reynolds) and Jordy (Smith) will pull straight up to that level to start this year or not, but I know that Parko’s always hungry and Mick (Fanning) goes without saying,” Slater said. “C.J. (Hobgood) got a taste of it last year again and will come out firing for sure. Taj (Burrow) will be hungry, but I wonder how his focus will be after a couple of really great seasons and not quite the results that his surfing shows all the time – he’s always one of the best at Snapper. Bede (Durbidge) will quietly execute more people and Bobby (Martinez) is going to be the hungriest, starting the year without a main sponsor.”

In addition to the returning stars on this year’s ASP World Tour, a new crop of fresh faces will be joining the best surfers on the planet as they traverse the globe tearing apart the best waves in the world.

“I think Kerr could show some big things, but he was never able to capitalize on a great start the other year and never really backed it up when the time came,” Slater said. “I don’t expect him to make the same mistakes this time. Nathaniel Curran could quietly take a few people out. I’m really interested to see Barca and what he will do. He’s finally made the tour and I don’t know if people outside of Hawaii know how good he is yet, especially guys on the World Tour. For all of them, it’s a transition from four-man to two-man, and it’s a different field with more experience. Rookies need a good start to get out of tough seeding position as well – the first three events are key to a guy requalifying.”

Mick Fanning (AUS), 27, former ASP World Champion (2007), jumped seven spots to ASP World No. 8 last season, but the ultra-fit natural-footer is recharged and ready for another assault at the ASP World Title.

“Last year, I wasn’t motivated at all really,” Fanning said. “It was a huge learning curve for me with all the extra attention, but I had fun. I also had a hip problem throughout the year so I took a couple of events off to get on top of that. This year, I feel very focused and motivated for a big year. I am healthy and fit and everything else is going really well.”

Fanning will draw on his hometown experience at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, putting his years of experience at the iconic Snapper Rocks to good use.

“It is great to start the year off at my home break,” Fanning said. “I guess it is like when everyone has an event at their home break and you’re comfortable. You know the waves by heart and you sleep in your own bed and drive your own car. There is nothing like it – it’s great. Obviously the Top 5 will always be huge threats but I think Bede (Durbidge) and Joel (Parkinson) have something they really want this year and they are focused on getting it. I think Michel Bourez will be the biggest standout of the rookies.”

Bede Durbidge (AUS), 25, current ASP World No. 2, has improved his standing every year since his elite inception at 2005, and has his eyes set on the ASP World Title in 2009.

“I have had a good steady climb on the ratings so I guess there is only one more spot to go now,” Durbidge said. “It’s always been my goal to win the ASP World Title so I’m in a great spot now to give it a good shot. My preparation has been going really well. It’s so good to have all this time off and work on my fitness and my boards. It’s the longest break we get all year so it’s perfect to build a good fitness and set up for the year ahead.”

“Kelly (Slater) had nearly a perfect season last year,” Durbidge said. “He was in such good form – he was just on at every event. To take Kelly out this year is a big ask, but it is achievable and I feel I’m up to the challenge. I’m just going to focus on all the things I can do to give myself the best chance and hopefully he doesn’t have a season like last year.”

The 2009 ASP Top 45 will kick off this season’s Dream Tour at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, which boasts a waiting period from February 28 – March 11, 2009.

The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast pres. by LG Mobile will be webcast LIVE via www.quiksilverpro.com.au

The event will incorporate the Roxy Pro Gold Coast pres. by LG Mobile, the opening event of the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour.
